(6) Whoi do you know [thati you can really trust]? (7) Which argumenti do you know [thati Sandy thought was unconvincing]? One could assume that the contrast illustrated in (1) to (5) can be accounted for by considering the grammaticalized discourse functions of the dislocated phrases. In the ungrammatical cases in (2) and (5), the dislocated phrase can be considered a grammaticalized topic – hence the term topicalization. In the grammatical cases in (6) and (7), the dislocated phrases can be analyzed as the focus of the sentence. In section 1 below, however, we will show that such an approach is seriously flawed. Instead, we will suggest that the contrast between (6) and (7) on the one hand, and (2) as well as (5) on the other hand, can be derived from the interaction of two assumptions. The first assumption concerns the typology of phrases in HPSG. Pollard/Sag (1994:391) assume that subjects are realized as subject daughters, and that topicalized phrases, wh-subjects, as well as whobjects are realized as filler daughters. Contrary to this assumption, we assume that wh-moved object daughters and ‘ordinary’ subject daughters in English are specifier daughters, and not filler daughters, or subject daughters, respectively. Topicalized phrases, however, are analyzed as filler daughters. An important consequence of this move is that subjects and wh-moved objects are locally related to a lexical head, viz. to the head whose specifier they are. Topicalized phrases are not locally related to a

Imperfect Checking

This article presents a unified solution to two long-standing problems concerning successive cyclicity. First, under the minimalist program of Chomsky (1995), a trigger for successive-cyclic wh-movement to [–wh] SpecC positions must be identified. Second, as noted by den Besten & Webelhuth (1990), there is a strict prohibition against unbound intermediate traces that result from a combination o...

Storage and integration in the processing of filler-gap dependencies: an ERP study of topicalization and wh-movement in German.

We recorded event-related brain potentials (ERPs) during the processing of unambiguous German sentences containing different types of filler-gap dependency. Both topicalization constructions and wh-questions were found to elicit a left-anterior negativity (LAN) prior to the processing of the subcategorizing verb, relative to a gap-free control condition. At the subcategorizing verb, sentences c...

Reconstruction, Beck Effects and Wh-phrases in Situ

This paper argues that wh-in situ is interpreted in its original position. Focusing on the ambiguity of how many sentences, it shows that the semantic behavior of wh in-situ can be explained without postulating LF (phrasal) movement. It is then pointed out that the fact that wh-phrases in situ lack anti-reconstruction effects follows directly from this non movement approach. The paper also show...

Rule Ordering in Verb Cluster Formation

This paper addresses two puzzles in the domain of verb cluster formation and proposes a solution in terms of rule ordering. The first puzzle is the socalled extraposition paradox where extraposition can target a VP that is part of a verb cluster only if the VP is topicalized but not when the VP remains clause-final. I propose that verb cluster formation takes place at PF under adjacency and thu...

Experimental Evidence for the Syntax of Phrasal Comparatives in Polish

Pancheva (2009) argues that phrasal comparatives in Polish exhibit a subject-island effect. She proposes an account of the island effect as a combination of several factors: than has a small clause complement in phrasal comparatives; wh-movement turns the than-clause into a degree predicate; wh-movement of the vP subject is prohibited by an anti-locality constraint; sub-extraction of the vP sub...
